ASPEA

The Portuguese Association of Environmental Education (ASPEA) is a Portuguese Environmental Non-Governmental Organization, founded in 1990, with 6 regional delegations (Lisboa, Aveiro, Viseu, Bragança, Braga, Faial), acting in the field of Environmental Education through education, organization of events, consulting and promotion of national and international projects

ASPEA has 30 years of experience in the fields of educating, campaigning and raising awareness for environmental issues, aiming its activities at all publics, educating children, youth and adults, from all provenances and occupations striving to form professionals, advocates and elucidated citizens on the concerns pertaining to all environmental problematics and challenges.

For the last three decades, ASPEA has been taking part in international and European projects for the development of resources for environmental education within all dimensions of sustainability.
It is, since 1992, the Portuguese branch of the Foundation CEI – Caretakers of the Environment International being also an Affiliate Institution for the Earth Charter since 2005.

In the wake of work developed since 2015, the Council of Ministers of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) has appointed ASPEA as its advisory observer taking thus part in the coordination of the Environmental Education Council of this body.

At European level, ASPEA is the permanent representative of ‘Let’s take care of the Planet’initiative. Nationwide ASPEA participates in working committees both in the ministry of education and ministry of environment.

Additionally, and to operationalize its mission, ASPEA is co-author of the National Referential for environmental education in Portugal, in effect since 2018, where specific provisions in regards to education and capacity-building in respect to environment policies are laid out.

 

ASPEA is the organizer of the Annual National Environmental Education Days, an event that takes place every year in Portugal, as well as the coordinator for the Environmental Education Days in the Portuguese Speaking countries that takes place in a different country within the CPLP every two years.

On a local level, ASPEA, together with municipalities and other local territories, elaborates bespoke environmental education strategies, subsequently assisting and supporting their implementation.

ASPEA is also directly developing or assisting in fostering, through strategic partnerships with municipalities and other organisations, three territorial features: an ecological farm and forest – Quinta Ecológica da Moita (Oliveirinha, Aveiro, Central Portugal), a formerly depopulated village in Mós (Bragança, northern Portugal) and a former agroforested holding in Viseu –Quinta da Cruz – where environmental education and engagement are very important to the local communities.

XUNTA DE GALICIA

Within the Department of Education, University and Professional Training, the General Directorate of Education, Professional Training and Educational Innovation has the responsibility of educational provision in Galicia. It is responsible for educational standards and the training and development of the schools. As part of the role, the organisation works with schools and school staff on the implementation of regional initiatives to meet school improvement priorities and to share in and support innovation in teaching, learning and school leadership. Its general scope of action includes the education authority at a regional level, including the design of education programmes and plans for all the Galician Community Region, with more than 1500 school institutions in all the four Galician provinces. It represents the higher decision making institution of the Galician Parliament with regard to the education sphere at all levels: primary schools, secondary, tertiary and VET institutions.

The General Directorate of Education, Professional Training and Educational Innovation of the Galician Government has already coordinated one European project in the field of linguistic diversity, promoting the learning of languages in the lifelong learning programmes – Chinese.com, EMPORT Improve Employability and enhance European Competitiveness through the acquisition of language and cultural competences in Portuguese”, etc. within KA2 action. “Arbax – Against racial bullying and Xenophobia Project”within Comenius –LLP.

Norwegian University College for Green Development (HGUt)

The Norwegian University College for Green Development (HGUt) is an accredited academic institution in Norway which delivers both bachelor level education and who undertake a wide range of research into Regenerative Development with regional, national and international partners from across Europe. Included in this focus on Regenerative Development are Community-capacity building; Innovative community enterprise development training; the Repurposing of Cultural Heritage resources for the 21st Century economy; Mobilization, Participation and Empowerment strategies for communities; Vocational Transition from surplus agricultural employee to self-employment; Regenerative/sustainable tourism; and the integration of cultural Heritage into contemporary communities. HGUt also specializes in developing and delivering the only programme of Regenerative Agriculture in Norway, with a focus upon understanding life in the soil and the role of composting in creating living ecological agricultural systems.

Municipality of Lousada

The Municipality of Lousada (ML) is an institution of local public administration that manages an area of 95 km2 with about 50.000 inhabitants. This highly populated area, in a periurban region, faces many challenges regarding its sustainable development, life quality and populations» literacy and citizenship. Our work is directed at achieving a sustainable development with benefits and opportunities to all our citizens, in environmental, social and economic fields. ML’s mission is to define guiding strategies and execute the resulting local policies through measures and programs in various areas of our competence, promoting the quality of life of all citizens and ensuring high standards of quality services. Since 2015, the ML has implemented an innovative and pioneer sustainability agenda, integrating all types of stakeholders in active citizenship: private companies, parishes, schools, NGOs, etc. The whole educative system was shifted towards environmental actions, with local projects. Also, the territory has been intervened in order to protect priority areas for nature conservation, control invasive species and improve degraded areas. Over 20 hectares of degraded land has been converted to nature conservation areas. The owners of private forests are being involved in awareness raising campaigns towards sustainable forest management. The ML is fully committed with finding strategies securing sustainable development and nature conservation. For this, and recognizing the impact that a European Development Plan may present in our services, we regularly take part/coordinate European projects related to environmental topics, such as: IMPRINT+, SHADOWS, Optiwamag, NGEurope, among others. Our transformative action towards sustainability illustrate the powerful role environmental education plays in promoting environmental practices, supporting the creation of conservation areas and environmental job opportunities, as well as reconnecting local citizens with their rural landscape.

Brasov Metropolitan Agency for Sustainable Development

Brasov Metropolitan Agency for Sustainable Development is an associative body of the communities from the Brasov Metropolitan Area. The organization brings together municipality of Brasov with the local authorities from other 6 medium sized cities and small sized towns plus 10 rural communities. Together, all these communities form a well-defined urban region also known as Brasov Metropolitan Area.

Thus, Metropolitan Agency represents the intercommunity development body that gathers the sustainable development goals of the member communities and strives toward developing projects that benefits the entire metropolitan territory. The agency is controlled exclusively by public bodies and the projects and policies that it implements are approved by the general assembly of the agency which gathers the mayors of the member communities.

Given its territorial profile, the Metropolitan Agency closely works with all the communities and a variety of stakeholders, from academia to the business community, public authorities and NGO’s.

As an organization oriented towards sustainable development in the Brasov Metropolitan area, its field of interest are related to the following areas:

From its start in 2006, Brasov Metropolitan Agency has directly implemented various projects, both national and international, and helped its member communities in the development of Local Development Strategies and/or in the implementation of local projects financed through European Regional Development Fund, European Social Fund, LEADER for rural develpoment, Community-led local development for urban marginalised areas.

At the european level, the organisation has been involved in partnerships for implementing projects financed through programmes as: INTERREG, URBACT, FP7, H2020, Lifelong Learning, Erasmus Plus.
